  • Burial Shemoth – Nov. 2, 2008 at 10:00 am -In the Jewish tradition, we show respect for texts containing God’s name (known as shemoth, “names”) by burying them. The Ottawa Jewish Cemeteries in cooperation with the Beth Shalom Congregation will provide the Jewish Community the opportunity to bury old siddurim, humashim, and other religious items no longer in use in one of the gravesites in the Bank Street Cemetery. The gravesite will be located at the rear of Section 9. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity.

  • Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies at Carleton University presents: The Israeli Mini Film Festival October 30, November 4 and November 6, 2008. The Zelikovitz Centre, along with Hillel Ottawa and the Israel Awareness Committee are proud to host the Israeli Film Festival at Carleton University. These fascinating films, all from the Ma'ale School of Television, Film, and the Arts in Jerusalem, focus on three themes - Gender, Identity and Culture, and the Holocaust.   • Agudath Israel’s Social Action Committee, The TOV Team, presents a Sunday Brunch & Learn Series on mental health and mental illness “Stigma: Community and Jewish Perspectiveson Mental Health and Mental Illness” November 16: 9:15-11am Rabbi Charles Popky will speak about the Jewish perspective on mental illness. Dr. Howard Chodos is the Director of the National Mental Health Strategy and will talk about key initiatives in the Mental Health Commission to reduce the stigma of mental illness. Renee Ouimet, MSW, is with the Canadian Mental Health Association and will detail her work in the area of reducing stigma in the community. Ann Popovich, RN is a retired registered nurse with a professional training and background in psychiatric nursing and community mental health. With a family member who was diagnosed with a major mental illness twenty years ago, Ann has been active in family education and support as well as public awareness initiatives.
